Foundation raises more than $500,000 to support compassionate leadership programs and announces expanded scholarship commitment beginning in 2027
OGUNQUIT, Maine, Aug 01, 2026, ZEX PR WIRE — The TramutoPorter Foundation celebrated its 25th Anniversary Gala on July 30 at Camp Sunshine in Casco, Maine, honoring Maine Gov. Janet Mills as its 2026 Compassionate Leader of the Year and announcing a new chapter of multimillion-dollar endowment commitments supporting compassionate leadership across education, hearing equity, health and human rights.

The milestone evening also marked the 70th birthday of co-founder Donato J. Tramuto and brought together more than 200 partners, scholars, community leaders, board members and supporters to celebrate the Foundation’s 25 years of impact and its next chapter of service.
“As we commemorate 25 years of the TramutoPorter Foundation, I am reminded that compassion is far more than a noble aspiration. It is a force that lifts individuals, strengthens communities and helps shape a more just world,” said Tramuto. “This anniversary marks not a conclusion, but a renewed commitment. My hope is that these endowments will allow compassionate leadership to flourish long after we are gone, touching lives we will never meet. I can think of no more meaningful way to honor this milestone, or my 70th birthday, than by investing in a future built on kindness.”
The event raised more than $500,000 to support TramutoPorter Foundation programs, including proceeds from a live auction benefiting the Foundation’s work. The celebration was chaired by Joanne Bean, TramutoPorter Foundation board member and CEO of Camp Sunshine.

Gov. Janet Mills Honored for Compassionate Leadership
Mills received the Foundation’s 2026 Compassionate Leader of the Year Award in recognition of her leadership and longstanding commitment to the people and communities of Maine, including individuals and families too often marginalized or left behind.
The evening also included the surprise presentation of a portrait of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy by internationally acclaimed photographer Harry Benson, reflecting Kennedy’s enduring legacy of compassionate leadership, justice and human rights. x
“I am touched to be receiving the Compassionate Leadership Award in recognition of what my administration has tried to accomplish in such very trying times. And I am honored that, as part of this award, the TramutoPorter Foundation will be making a contribution to Camp Sunshine and to the Percival P. Baxter Foundation for scholarships for deaf and hard of hearing students, a cause that I know is close to Donato’s heart. Tonight we also reflect on the work of the TramutoPorter Foundation, which has advanced the education of more than 100 young adults and which has strengthened organizations, including Camp Sunshine, that are making this world a fairer, more equitable place for our children and families. Building a Permanent Legacy
To mark the Foundation’s 25th anniversary and his 70th birthday, Tramuto announced a multimillion-dollar philanthropic commitment to establish and expand perpetual endowments supporting compassionate leadership across education, hearing equity, health and human rights, with eight organizations.
Education has been central to the Foundation’s mission throughout its 25-year history. The Foundation has supported students through scholarships and educational opportunities in Maine, across the United States and internationally.
Beginning in 2027, the Foundation will expand its annual high school scholarship commitment to one four-year, $30,000 Compassionate Leadership Scholarship in memory of Mary Kelleher (former TramutoPorter Foundation Board member), deepening its investment in a student whose life, leadership and service reflects the Foundation’s mission.
Looking Ahead: Defiant Hope
Following the anniversary celebration, the Foundation’s next major initiative will be its annual Compassionate Leadership Educational Series, beginning Sept. 11. This year’s theme, “Defiant Hope,” will examine how individuals can use their voices, positions, platforms and lived experiences to advance compassion in service of a more just and equitable future.
For the TramutoPorter Foundation, defiant hope reflects a central belief of compassionate leadership: Hope is not passive. It requires action, courage and a willingness to stand firmly for human dignity, especially in moments of division, injustice or uncertainty. The educational series will carry that message forward through programming focused on leadership, equity, service and social impact.
